When we talk about SEO, there is one thing that all marketing managers are following:
Ranks.
Losing SEO orders can therefore feel like a real blow in your stomach...
... especially for online shops.
When you see your visibility in the search engines sinking, it is quite natural to be concerned about what this does to traffic – and finally sales.
The good news is that you can get back the lost SEO rankings – and sometimes get even stronger back – if you take a strategic and proactive approach.
In this article I show you step by step how to get your ratings back and get your online store on the right track again.
1. Find out why your ratings have fallen
So the first thing you have to do to get the rankings back is to figure out what happened. Typical reasons for falling rankings may be:
- Google Algorithm Updates: Google is still updating its algorithms, and it can affect your location. Use Tools As Ahrefs or Sécrush to check if your changes coincide with an update.
- Technical problems: Things that corrupted links, server time or screening errors may damage your SEO. Take a SEO Technical Check to ensure that everything is working properly.
- Your competitors have improved: It may have been that competitors have optimized their content and thus moved past you. Use tools like Ahrefs to see how they have got a head start.
- Content not keeping its objectives: Old or duplicated content can reduce your rankings. Check your content quality and make sure it is up to date.
What does a Google algorithm update look like about traffic?
In the worst case, you can end up with almost no traffic. Report under (from Ahrefs) An example of a page that went from 3,500 visits a month to less than 200 in one year.

At INEVO We use our experience, smart tools and a holistic approach to help you find and fix the cause of your SEO problems.
2. Fix SEO technical problems
Online stores often have complex technical configurations, so the SEO is super important when you get back the rankings.
Here's what you should do:
- Fix broken links and 404 errors: Apply Google Search Console to keep an overview and repair broken links regularly – it gives a better user experience and shows Google that your page is to be trusted.
- Optimize side speed: Nobody likes slow web pages - neither users nor Google. Use Tools As Google PageSpeed Insights to figure out what could be better. Remember 63% of users preferably find information on the mobile phone, so the mobile speed is extra important.
- Make sure important pages are indexed correctly: Check that Google actually indexes your main pages. The "Decking" report in Google Search Console can help you find any problems.
To find corrupted links and 404 errors in Google Search Console, click on Pages in the left menu and scroll down the page.

Three. Refresh content to keep it as appropriate
Out-of-date content can be a major reason for your ratings to sink.
Here's how to give the contents a proper refresh:
- Update product descriptions: Check that your product descriptions are unique and contain the relevant keywords.
- Use structured data: This helps Google understand your content better, so they can show more info right in the search results.
Kiss up old blog posts: Update statistics and add new clicks to old blog posts. Did you know that? 39% of market participants says that opt-out optimisation is their main SEO strategy?
4. Optimize for Mobile and Good User Experience (UX)
Google is very focused on mobile-first indexingSo good user experience is really important to SEO. Here's how you can do it better:
- Mobile optimisation: Page Above 70% of visits Until online shops are made on mobile, it is essential to be mobile friendly. Make sure it's easy to navigate, that the design is responsive and that the checkout goes like a game.
- Page navigation: Makes it easy to find out with bread pulp and clear product categories. This will help lower the flow rate and make users spend more time on your page.
- Side experience signals: Working with Core Web Vitals – i.e. things like load time, interactivity and visual stability. Try to get the pages to load under three seconds to avoid people clicking away.
We do what we say -- so our own website scores high on Core Web Vitals. Thank you for your help. Sands- What?

5. Get new backends and get back the lost
Backlinks are important to keep good SEO orders. Here's how to get back lost links and get new ones:
- Check your backend profile: Use tools like Ahrefs to find out if you have lost any backends. If you have, try contacting those who have linked to you to get them back.
- Quality links go: Cooperation with people in the industry or write guest articles to get valuable backlinks. Backlinks from high authority pages give your SEO a proper boost.
- Create content that people will link to: Make divisible content as info graphics or practical guides. Info Graphics are actually 30 times more likely being read more than a regular article, so they're a super way to attract backlinks.
6. Use the appropriate keywords
Did your rankings fall?
Then it may be time to refresh your keyword strategy:
- Update search terms: Use tools such as Sécrush or Ahrefs to check if there are new and popular keywords in your industry that you should bet on.
- Check the competitors: See what competitors rank for which you do not, and use these options to your advantage by creating or updating content around the search terms.
- Batch on long-tail keywords: Long-tail keywords may have lower search volumes, but they are easier to rank and often give higher conversion rates. Instead of just “bike equipment,” you can go for something like “best environmentally friendly bike equipment in Norway.”
Where to Start? Create a FAQ section on your most popular product pages. We used this strategy for a client, and it led to 20 million extra online sales!
Seven. Prepare your product pages for sale
It's not enough to just get more traffic – you also have to make sure that those who visit since your actual purchase something:
- Optimize for conversions (CRO): The average conversion rate for online shops is: 2.5%But you can do it better. Test out different variants with A/B testing to see which product descriptions, images or buttons work best. 70% of market participants says A/B testing is essential to increase conversions.
- Add rich product extracts: Show ratings, prices and stock status in the search results to make your products more tempting and get more clicks.
- Show customer reviews: Customer reviews are gold to build trust and make more clicks on. People love to read what others mean before they buy anything.
For example, used Emilie Bergquist from INEVO A/B testing to see which pop-up worked best. The result was that the best variant doubled the income compared to the usual pop-up.

Eight. Follow, target results and improve
SEO is a long-term process, not something you do once and forget. Keep updated:
- Configure regular reports: Use Tools As Google Analytics and Google Search Console to accompany organic traffic, velocity, click rate and conversion rate.
- Use heatmaps for insight: With tools like Hot you can see how people move on your side. This will help you find out where the users lose interest, so you can make the necessary improvements.
